‘What is that tree?’

‘I am a seagull!’
This is a work-in-progress based on the character Nina Zarechnaya, from Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull.
I am performing this piece for the forest, for the trees, plants, dead cones, squirrels, ants, bugs. I make photos and videos to immortalise the progress.
Nina is a clumsy girl who wants very much to become an actress. In Romanian, there is an expression that describes a clumsy, don’t-know-what-to-do-with-yourself attitude: ‘You stare like a turkey hen in the branches!’
Nina’s mood moves from clumsiness and naivity to despair and failure, as she transforms from a turkey hen into a seagull.
